UNIT 4 - HOMEOSTASIS Flashcards
1
Q
What is the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
A
By Hans Selye: the stimuli, stressers and response
2
Q
Explain the alarm stage of GAS
A
- arousal of the CNS
- body’s defenses are mobilized
- fight or flight
3
Q
Explain stage of resistance or adaptation
A
- arousal of the CNS to release of hypothalamic CRH
- CRH stimulated pit. gland to release ACTH
- ACTH stimulates adrenal cortex to release cortisol
- cortisol mobilizes the bodies energy
- tries to live with it
4
Q
explain stage of exhaustion
A
- compensatory mechanism break down
- effort of trying to fight it causes impairment of immune response
5
Q
Disease
A
- failure of the body systems to function within normal range
6
Q
3 components of physiologic stress
A
- stressor initiates disturbance
- a chemical or physical disturbance is produced by the stressor (eg. change in pH)
- the body responds to counteract the disturbance
7
Q
Intrinsic regulation
A
- Autoregulation: automatic response in a cell, tissue, or organ
8
Q
Extrinsic regulation
A
responses controlled by nervous and endocrine system (eg. the brain)
9
Q
Negative feedback
A
- set point and error are amplified and inverted, therefore the inverted output counteracts the disturbance
- leads to stability
10
Q
Positive feedback
A
- signal input is amplified but no inverted, therefore the output reinforces the disturbance
- leads to instability
11
Q
What stress is the most important factor that causes cell injury and cell death
A
decreased oxygen supply
12
Q
Explain the stress response
A
- initiated by nervous and endocrine system
- stress -> CRF released from hypothalamus ->ACTH released from the adrenal gland -> Cortisol (key stress hormone) released from adrenal cortex
