Unit 4 - Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
The process of keeping conditions at a set point where an organism can survive.
Stimulus
Anything that causes an imbalance in the internal conditions of an organism.
Sensor
A protein that detects a stimulus and sends a message to the control center.
Control center
Receives info from the sensors, compares info to ideal values, and sends a message to the effectors.
Effector
Any organ/tissue/cell that changes in response to a message sent by the control center. To return to the set point.
Negative Feedback Loop
A negative feedback loop increases or decreases conditions maintain homeostasis.
Positive Feedback Loop
A positive feedback loop increases or decreases conditions away from the set point. (NOT maintaining homeostasis)
Thermoregulation
The process of keeping body temperature the same in different environments.
