What is culture?
Any group of people who identify or associate with one another on the basis of some common purpose, need, or similarity or background.
What are the shared elements of culture?
- learned experiences
- beliefs
- values
What is multicultural cllg?
cllg in which the cllr and client differ.
What is the etic perspective?
When qualities exist in cllg that are culturally generalizable
What is the emic perspective?
Assumes cllg approaches must be designed to be culturally specific.
What is essential as part of understanding multicultural cllg?
That cultural and diversity factors should be combined
What is ethnocentrism?
- People judge other cultures as less than or inferior to their own and this judgment is often extrapolated to individuals living in or emigrating from these cultures
What is the culturally encapsulated cllr?
One who disregards cultural differences and works under mistaken assumption that theories and techniques are equally applicable to all people
What is over-culturalizing?
Mistaking people’s reactions to poverty and discrimination for their cultural pattern
What are the two main issues of concern for multicultural cllrs?
- dominance of theories based on European/NA values
- sensitivity to cultures in general
- understanding how cultural systems operate and influence behaviours
- providing effective cllg services across cultures
- development and employment of cllg theories
What are the three areas that cllrs must be sensitive to?
- Knowledge
- self-awareness
- skills
What are the three core competencies of multicultural cllg?
- cultural self-awareness
- awareness of client cultural identities
- culturally sensitive working alliance
