Core Vocabulary / Key Vocabulary:
Words that occur more frequently in text or representing the most important ideas and concepts.
Academic Knowledge Domain Vocabulary:
Words/concepts used in specific core areas such as math and science.
Sampling:
A diagnostic vocabulary assessment using flash cards.
Multiple Dimensions of Word Knowledge:
A multiple choice vocabulary comprehension tool for six knowledge areas: recognition, definition, classification/example, context, application, and interrelatedness.
Antonyms:
Words opposite or near opposite based on a shared characteristic.
Recursive Writing:
The tendency to reuse and repeat certain scribblings and drawings.
Prephonemic Stage of Writing:
Children begin to use letters-usually capitals- to represent meaning but the letters do not represent their phonemic or sound values. They are used as place holders for meaning.
Self Regulated Strategies Development (SRSD):
Includes writing strategies across and within genres, vocabulary and background knowledge needed to use these strategies, and self regulation strategies for applying writing strategies throughout the writing process.
Performance Based Assessment / Authentic Assessment:
Evaluates students performance in completing a product that demonstrates their use of new skills and knowledge. Journals, checklists, portfolios, projects and rubrics.
Writing Process Instruction:
Teaches the kinds of thinking processes skilled writers use in different forms of text.
