Literacy:
An ability to read, write, or decipher visual or symbolic representations.
Illiteracy:
An inability to read, write, or decipher visual or symbolic representations.
Aliteracy:
An ability to read, write, or decipher visual or symbolic representations but showing no interest in doing so.
Differentiation:
A way of thinking about teaching and learning that enables teachers to recognize, understand, and address student differences in classrooms.
Science of Reading:
Reading is a learned skill, it doesn’t come naturally. And there is a systematic way to teach it.
Response to Intervention(RTI):
Evidence based practices aimed at preventing student reading failure through systematic implementation of a series of tired instructional interventions in which identified students receive timely, targeted, high quality, and intensive core and supplementary reading instruction.
Culturally-Responsive Instruction:
Keeping diverse cultures in mind when designing instruction
Common Core State Standards:
Political, social, educational, and economic actions that are aimed at preparing students to be more competitive in the world or work and in university studies.
Reading:
Now includes a broader category of literacies that include, oral language, traditional print, digital, visual, social and cultural aspects of human communication.
