What is quality?
Quality means to produce a good or service which meets customer expectations
What is quality control?
QC is the checking for quality at the end of the production process. It uses quality inspectors as a way of finding faults.
What is quality assurances?
QA involves Checking the standard throughout and at all stages of the production process by employees.
What is total quality control?
Total Quality Management is the continuous improvement of products and processes by focusing on quality at each and every stage of production – it is a Japanese management tool.
What are the benefits of quality control? (2)
- Tries to eliminate faults or errors before the customer receives the product or service
- Less training is required for the workers as inspectors are employed to check quality
What are the drawbacks of quality control? (2)
- Identifies faulty products at the end but doesn’t find out the problem and so difficult to solve problem.
- As quality is checked at end, the product may have to be scrapped if it has faults, causing higher costs
What are the benefits of quality assurances? (2)
- Tries to eliminate faults or errors at all stages of production, so saves costs

- Expensive to train ALL employees to check the quality of their own work at each production stage
- Relies on ALL employees to be committed to checking quality. If one doesn’t, it will impact overall quality
What are the benefits of total quality control? (2)
- It aims for ‘zero faults’ and so this increases customer satisfaction
- Production costs should be lower as there is less wastage from faulty products
What are the drawbacks of total quality control? (2)
- It is expensive to train all employees to check the product or service.
- Relies on ALL employees to be committed to checking quality. If one doesn’t, it will impact overall quality
