What are the necessities in a balanced diet?
Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Water/Fluids, Fibre
What happens if you do not have a balanced diet?
Malnutrition
Obesity

What is malnutrition
physical weakness resulting from insufficient food
What is anorexia linked to?
Fear of gaining fat and having a distorted body image
Body image
A personal concept of your own physical appearance
Why must we eat food?
To provide energy to our body
Basal Metabolic Rate
the minimum rate of energy required to keep all of the life processes of the body maintained when it is at rest
What factors must be considered when deciding what to eat when competing?
Before activity- do not eat too close to activity, more than 2 hours with no food
During activity- generally, nothing should be eaten during activity but something light is fine
After activity- same two hour gap should be left
Carbohydrate Loading
A tactic used by athletes in which they eat a lot of starch in the week before an event, as starch contains a lot of glycogen.
How does large amounts of glycogen help an athlete?
The glycogen is stored in the muscles, which helps delay tiredness and can improve performance in the end stages of a match because it is a slow-release form of energy
What kind of athletes would use carbohydrate loading?
Marathon runners and endurance event athletes
High protein diet
A diet used by mainly bodybuilders as means of building muscle and losing fat
