What is the difference between IMMIGRANTS and EMIGRANTS?
Immigrants are people who enter a country to live.
Emigrants are people who leave a country to live somewhere else.
What is NET INWARD migration?
More people enter a country than leave it.
What is NET OUTWARD migration?
More people leave a country than enter it.
What is an expatriate?
Someone who lives outside their native country.
List 4 types of migrants.
- REFUGEES are people who are being persecuted or victims of war may flee their country to seek ASYLUM in a safe country.
- People who move countries for work are called ECONOMIC MIGRANTS.
- People who move to a country without a visa or declaring their arrival to authorities are considered ILLEGAL MIGRANTS.
- STUDENTS often move to other countries to study.
- RETIREES often move to other countries. E.g. british expats in France or Spain.
List some causes and examples of of large scale refugee migration.
War eg. Somalian refugees fleeing to Kenya.
Natural disasters e.g after the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean which affected Sri Lanka & Indonesia.
which country hosts the largest refugee population in the world?
Turkey - mainly Syrian refugees.
Name 2 reasons for refugees fleeing from Somalia to Kenya
Civil war & drought.
Pakistan hosts a large number of refugees from which country?
Afghanistan.
Why is it difficult for countries like Pakistan and Kenya to support large refugee populations?
They are also poor.
Kenya also suffers from drought and Pakistan suffers from conflict between tribes.
Define the word smuggler
A person who moves people or goods out of a country illegally.
Give an example of large scale economic migration
Mexico to USA.
List 5 reasons Mexicans want to work in the USA
- Almost half of all Mexicans live below the poverty line.
- There is a huge difference in GDP between the two countries.
- More jobs are available.
- The united States is close.
- Money can be sent home (remittances)
List 4 changes that may occur in the community international migrants leave behind
- Money sent home (remittances) brings added wealth.
- Demand for local services will change.
- Break up of families.
- Less pressure on water & food supplies.
- More employment for those left behind.
- Changes in the role of women.
List 4 effects of migrant workers coming into a community
- Community becomes for culturally diverse.
- Growth of local economy.
- Greater use of public services.
- Lower wages
- Tensions between groups.
- New skills and ideas.
- Communication / language problems can exist.
