Unit 3.1 Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystem
All the organisms (community) living in a particular habitat + the non living components with which they interact.
Population
All the individuals of the same species living in an ecosystem.
Interspecific competition
Competition between members of different species for similar resources.
Less intense than intraspecific competition.
Intraspecific competition
Intense competition between members of the same species for the same resources.
Species
A group of genetically similar organisms with common characteristics that are able to interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
Biodiversity
The number of different species that exist in an area.
Community
All the organisms of all species living in an ecosystem.
Habitat
The place where an organism lives.
Predation
One organism (predator) eats another (prey) to obtain food.
Niche
The role of an organism in a community.
Producers
Produce their own food molecules using photosynthesis.
Plants are the producers in an ecosystem.
Herbivores (primary consumers)
Animals which feed on plants to obtain food molecules.
Secondary consumers
Eat other animals to obtain food molecules.
Could be carnivores (eat other animals) or omnivores (eat both plants and animals)
Food chain
Shows feeding relationships within a food web. Arrows represent energy flow.
Food web
Shows feeding relationships within a community.
Made of many inter-linked food chains.
