Unit 3 Vocab - Perception Flashcards
selective attention
the focusing of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus
inattentional blindness
failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere
visual capture
the tendency for vision to override the other senses
Gestalt
Gestalt psychologists emphasized our tendency to integrate pieces of info into meaningful wholes
an organized whole
figure-ground
the organization of the visual field into objects that stand out from their surroundings
grouping
the perceptual tendency to organize stimuli into coherent groups
depth perception
the ability to see objects in 3-D although the images that strike the retina are 2-D
allows us to judge distance
visual cliff
a labratory device for testing depth perception in infants and young animals
binocular cues
depth cues, like retinal disparity and convergence that depend on the use of 2 eyes
monocular cues
depth cues, like interposition and linear perspective that are available to either eye alone
retinal disparity
a binocular cue for perceiving depth that compares images from both eyeballs
brain computes distance using the disparity/difference between the 2 images
convergence
enables the slightly different images from each eye to come together as one
the rotation of the 2 eyes inward toward a light source so the image falls on corresponding points on the foveas
Phi phenomenon
an illusion of movement created when 2 or more adjacent lights blink on and off in quick succession
perceptual consistency
the perceptual stability of the size, shape, color, and brightness for familiar objects seen at varying distances, angles, and lighting conditions
perceptual adaptation
the ability to adjust to an artificially displaced or inverted visual field
