Unit 3 Thorax Flashcards
Lumbocostal ligament
TVP of L1 to Rib 12.
Acts like iliolumbar ligament. Acts as anchor.
Intertransverse ligament
Limits how much TVPS can move away from one another, limit flexion but also side bending.
Lateral costotransverse ligament
TVP of vertebrae to rib of same number.
Radiate ligament
Wrapping like circle around the rib head.
Maintains articular relationship of ribs 2-10 with intervertebral space.
Ligamentum Flavum:
Connects adjacent vertebrae in the thoracic and lumbar regions, providing stability and resistance to flexion.
Supraspinous Ligament
Connect spinous processes on superior aspect of SP’s, offering support and limiting excessive flexion.
Interspinous ligament
Connects adjacent spinous processes, offering support and limiting excessive flexion.
Orientation of Superior facets of throacic spine
BUL = Back, upwards slightly and lateral
Orientation of Superior facets of lumbar spine
Back & Medial
Prefered motion of Thoracic spine
Flexion/ extension then side bending
Secondary is rotation
Only long bone of the body that is horizontal
Clavicle
What is the bony articulation between the Upper limb and the trunk
Clavicle
Global motion of the thorax
Increase AP diameter of thoracic cavity
Breathing in motions of the thoracic cage
Angles of ribs descend
Lifts sternum up and out to increase anterior and posterior distance in thoracic cavity to allow us to breathe and lungs expand.
Breathing out motions of the thoracic cage
Angles of ribs ascend when exhaling.
