Ligaments of upper limb Flashcards
Inferior acromioclavicular ligament
Inferior aspects of the acromion to the lateral aspect of clavicle
Superior acromioclavicular ligament
Connects superior aspects of acromion to the lateral aspect of the clavicle.
Annular ligament
Anterior margin of radial notch of ulna circling around the head of radius to attach to radial notch.
Function of Coracoacromial ligament
prevents superior dislocation of humeral head
Connects coracoid process to a bigger structure to create more stability and strengthens coracoid.
Coracoclavicular ligament connects
The upper surface of coracoid to the under surface of clavicle
Two part of coracoclavicular ligament
Conoid: Conoid tubercle of clavicle to upper surface of coracoid process
Trapezoid: Trapezoid line on the inferior clavicle to upper surface of coracoid process of scapula
What ligaments stabilize the sternoclavicular (SC) joint
Costoclavicular, sternoclavicular and interclavicular ligaments
Coracohumeral ligament
Outer border of coracoid process and the greater tubercle of the humerus
Function of the Coracohumeral ligament
Stabilizes GH joint.
Prevents superior or inferior dislocation of the humeral head during external rotation.
Costcoclavicular ligament
Inferior margin of sternal end of clavicle to the superior margin of the 1st rib and its costal cartilage.
Transverse humeral
Greater tubercle to lesser tubercle.
Sternoclavicular ligament
Anterior: Anterosuperior aspect of sternal end of clavicle to posterior aspect of manubrium.
Posterior: Posterior aspect of sternal end of clavicle to anterior aspect of manubrium and 1st costal cartilage
Interclavicular
Sternal end of one clavicle to sternal end of the other clavicle
Inferior glenohumeral
Inferior glenoid margin to inferior aspect of anatomical neck of humerus.
Function of Inferior glenohumeral ligament
Prevents anterior & inferior dislocation of humeral head. Limits abduction, external and internal rotation.
Middle glenohumeral:
Anterior glenoid margin to lesser tubercle of humerus.
Function of superior & middle glenohumeral ligament
Prevents anterior dislocation of humeral head & limits external rotation
Superior glenohumeral:
Supraglenoid tubercle to proximal tip of lesser tubercle
Function of annular ligament
Holds head of radius against ulna to prevent distal dislocation of radius
Radial collateral ligament (elbow)
Lateral epicondyle of humerus to annular ligament and proximal end of supinator crest of ulna
Ulnar collateral ligament (elbow)
Medial epicondyle of humerus to proximal part of coronoid process and medial margin of olecranon of ulna
Forearm retinaculum
Collar like band spanning around wrist. It is continuous but posterior and anterior have different parts to play
Extensor retinaculum
Posterior part of forearm retinaculum. Achors down all extensor tendons so they don’t rise off wrist when extending.
Palmar carpal ligament
Anterior part of forearm retinaculum.
Anchors down all flexor tendons so they don;t rise off wrist during flexion.
Flexor retinaculum
Covers carpal tunnel distal to palmar carpal ligament.
Function of coracoclavicular ligament
Maintains position of clavicle relative to scapula.
Which shoulder ligament is always on tension
Coracohumeral
