The Articles of Confederation

A

Called for unicameral house
1 house
Based equally
Each state has the same amount of representatives
Needed a unanimous vote to pass something
Were a financial failure
No way to collect money
Can’t pay debts or soldiers
A lack of “hard money”
Paper money has gold the is in a federal reserved that backs up a dollar
In 1970’s United States had issue having enough gold to back paper money
In 1974 we got rid of that and backed it by are reputation
We are such a great country we don’t need it
Value of dollar goes down if our reputation if ruined
Foreign weakness
They didn’t develop a foriegn policy
States had more power them goverment
Domestic weakness
Each state had its own currency
The government had its own currency

A

Solider during the revolutionary war
He didn’t get pay
War ended 5 years ago
Bank forecloses his farm for not making payment
Because he was in debt he would go to debter prison
Was furious
Starts a rebellion
To burn down courthouse
Ends up becoming a huge rebellion with a militia
Burn buildings all through pennsylvannia
No militia to fight the rebellion
George Washington asks other states for militia help
States say no because they have more power than the militia
It spreads to other states
They decide to help and George Washington finally stops it
Realize the articles of confederation is horrible

American W. H. Harrison
Indians, Tecumseh, The Prophet
Tecumseh wants to unify all the Indian tribes into confederation
They are unified
In 1795 they are defeated by W. H. Harrison
They sign the Treaty of Greenville
By signing a treaty they are not a defeated foe
They are treated better and is more fair
They agree to leave the Ohio Valley for money

Alien act: Gave president power to expel or imprison people in times of crisis
Sedition act: Made it illegal to say anything against the government or president with the intent to defame

Louisiana Purchase

A

Considered best land purchase made in history
Originally wanted to only purchase Louisiana
James Monroe and Livingston goes to France to make the purchase
Congress agrees to let them spend 10million only for Louisiana
Before they talk French minister offers to sell the entire Louisiana territory for 15 million!
Thomas Jefferson tells them to accept it immediately!
But he does this without the approval of comgress or the people
