Unit 3: Parables of Jesus Christ Flashcards
Tell me a story. How about the Parable of the Sower?
Book of Matthew. When a sower sows, some seeds fall by the way-side, some on rocks, and some on thorns
Explain the 4 kinds of people, as proposed by the Parable of the Sower?
- Those who don’t study/think about the words they have heard. Satan will take away the words, and it will not be fruitful.
- Those who accept with pleasure on hearing, but it won’t be fruitful because the words will be destroyed in the force of worldly stress or strain.
- Those who accept the words happily, but the words will turn out useless when they are concerned with the worries of the world/desire for wealth
- Those who listen, understand, and live it. They will be fruitful.
Who do the characters in the Prodigal Son represent?
Son = humanity, Father = God
What facet of God is shown in the Prodigal Son?
His unconditional love. He loves the repenting sinner more than all his children who never strayed.
What is our responsibility as children of God?
to believe, love, and grow in perfection like Jesus
Tell me the two parables about a hidden treasure and a valuable pearl.
hidden treasure - Man who found out about the treasure hidden in a field sold everything he owned to buy the field.
Pearl - a merchant who sees a beautiful pearl is so enraptured with it, he is willing to pay any price for it.
The Kingdom of Heaven is like a valuable pearl. Explain the implications.
Complete surrender is necessary to attain the Kingdom of heaven. It should be our sole aim in life.
Tell me two versions of the Parable of the Talents
- Master had 3 servants: 5 talents, 2 talents, and 1.
2. Nobleman gave his 10 servants 1 talent each. 10 talents, 5 talents, and 1. Took the 1 and gave to the 10.
Our life is a …………….. given by …………… and we are the ………………………. .
trust; God; stewards
Tell me the two parables about Wheat and Weeds, and Good and Bad fish.
- Man planted wheat but weeds grew as well. If he gathered it then, it could accidentally root up the wheat too. At time of harvest, will tell his reapers to collect the weed first and burn it.
- Only the good fish are kept, bad is thrown back.
What do the two parables (Wheat/Weed, Good/Bad Fish) say about the Church and the Final Judgement?
They show the state of the Church in this world.
They say that at Jesus’s second coming, those who were faithful will be gathered together in glory. These people are the true believers. Note that not all who attend church are true believers.
