Built environment
The human-made spaces in which people live, work, and interact
Diaspora
A community of people who are dispersed throughout the world, but retain their cultural, religious, or ethnic differences
Charter group
An initial group that establishes a cultural, social, or ethnic community in a specific location
Ethnic islands
An area predominantly populated by a single ethnicity, sometimes in contrast to a city’s overall demographic makeup
Neolocalism
The seeking out of the regional culture and reinvigoration of it in response to the uncertainty of the modern world – giving places and people more control over the effects of globalisation
Sequent occupance
The notion that successive societies leave their cultural imprints on a place, each contributing to the cumulative cultural landscape
Nationality
Identity with a group of people who share legal attachment and personal allegiance to a country
Centripetal forces
Shared cultural practices, national symbols, and effective governance that reinforce a sense of unity among citizens
Centrifugal forces
Forces within a country that work to pull that country apart – opposite of centripetal forces
Sharia
The legal framework within which public and some private aspects of life are regulated for those living in a legal system based on Muslim principles
Blue laws
Regulations that make certain activities illegal on Sundays
Fundamentalism
A strict, literal interpretation of a religious text or set of precepts
Theocracies
In a theocracy the government is presumed to be divinely ordained by God
Imperialism
The practice of a country extending its power and influence over other countries, typically through the use of military force, economic coercion, or cultural domination
Colonialism
The process by which one nation exercises near complete control over another country which they have settled and taken over
