Unit 3 List Macromolecules CB Flashcards
Macro-molecule
A molecule containing a very large amount of atoms.
Ex. Protein,Nucleic Acid, or Synthetic Polymer
Organic
Involving organisms or products of their life process.
Carbon-containing compounds that are the basis for all living organisms.
Monomer
Individual network for atoms or molecules that are formed together to create a polymer.
Polymer
Any class of natural or synthetic substances.
Carbohydrate
Sugar molecules.
Lipids
Fatty compounds that can perform various functions in your body.
Fatty acids
Energy sources in the bloodstream of humans and membrane constituents. ( Protein,Lipids and Carbohydrates )
Protein
A molecule made up of amino acids. They are needed to give you energy.
Amino acids
Fundamental building blocks of proteins and nitrogenous backbones for compounds.
Enzymes
A biological catalyst and is usually always a protein.
Catalyst
Speeds up a specific chemical reaction in the cell or lowers the temperature of pressure needed to start a chemical reaction.
Nucleic acids
Large bio-molecules that play important roles in all cells and viruses.
Nucleotide
The basic building block of nucleic acids. ( RNA and DNA ).
Hormone
Chemical substances that act like messenger molecules through the body.
Steroids
Any group of fats that have a certain chemical structure.
Dehydration synthesis
Happens when 2 molecules or compounds are joined to make a larger molecule also following the removal of water.
Hydrolysis
Breaking down a compound and splitting a bond then adding the elements of water. Resulting in molecular fragments.
