Unit 3 List 1 Macromolecules Flashcards
Science
Macromolecule
a very large molecule (as of a protein, nucleic acid, or rubber) built up from smaller chemical structures
Organic
things that are natural or related to nature
Monomer
A molecule that can combine with others of the same kind to form a polymer
Polymer
large molecules made by bonding (chemically linking) a series of building blocks
Carbohydrates
sugar molecules
Lipid
any of various organic compounds that are insoluble in water.
Fatty Acids
the building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the food we eat.
Protein
A molecule made up of amino acids
Amino Acids
molecules that combine to form proteins
Enzymes
proteins that help speed up metabolism, or the chemical reactions in our bodies
Catalyst
a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction, or lowers the temperature or pressure needed to start one, without itself being consumed during the reaction
Nucleic acids
large biomolecules that play essential roles in all cells and viruses
Nucleotide
the basic building block of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA)
Hormone
chemical substances that act like messenger molecules in the body
Dehydration synthesis
the synthesis reactions which involve the formation of a new compound with the elimination of water molecules
Steroids
Any of a group of lipids (fats) that have a certain chemical structure
Hydrolysis
a common form of a chemical reaction where water is mostly used to break down the chemical bonds that exists between a particular substance.
