Genital self image
The collective term for the external genitals of the female.
vulva (VULL-vuh)
A highly sensitive sexual organ in the female; the glans is found in front of the vaginal entrance and the rest of the clitoris extends deeper into the body.
clitoris (KLIT-or-is)
The fatty pad of tissue under the pubic hair.
mons pubis (PYOO-bis)
Rounded pads of fatty tissue lying on either side of the vaginal entrance.
outer lips
Thin folds of skin lying on either side of the vaginal entrance.
inner lips
Two tiny glands located on either side of the vaginal entrance.
Bartholin glands
The skin between the vaginal entrance and the anus.
perineum (pair-ih-NEE-um)
The vaginal entrance.
introitus
Area of the vulva enclosed by the inner lips.
vestibule
A thin membrane that may partially cover the vaginal entrance.
hymen (HYE-men)
Cutting or removing parts of the clitoris or inner or outer lips. Also called female genital mutiliation.
female genital cutting
The tube-shaped organ in the female into which the penis is inserted during coitus and through which a baby passes during birth.
vagina (vuh-JINE-uh)
A muscle around the vaginal entrance.
pubococcygeus (pyoo-bo-cox-ih-GEE-us) muscle
Erectile tissue running under the inner lips and Skene’s gland.
vestibular bulbs
The female prostate; also called the paraurethral gland.
Skene’s gland
The organ in the female in which the fetus develops.
uterus (YOO-tur-us)
The tubes extending from the uterus to the ovaries; also called the oviducts.
fallopian (fuh-LOW-pee-un) tubes
Two organs in the female that produce eggs and sex hormones
ovaries
The male external sexual organ, which functions both in sexual activity and in urination.
penis
Spongy bodies running the length of the top of the penis.
corpora cavernosa
A spongy body running the length of the underside of the penis.
corpus spongiosum
A layer of skin covering the glans or tip of the penis in an uncircumcised male; also called the prepuce.
foreskin
Surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis.
circumcision
A form of male genital cutting in which a slit is made the length of the foreskin on top.
supercision (superincision)
A form of male genital cutting in which a slit is made on the lower side of the penis along its entire length.
subincision
The pouch of skin that contains the testes in the male.
scrotum (SKROH-tum)
The pair of glands in the scrotum that manufacture sperm and sex hormones.
testes
Tubes in the testes that manufacture sperm.
seminiferous (sem-ih-NIFF-ur-us) tubules
Cells in the testes that manufacture testosterone.
interstitial (int-er-STIH-shul) cells
The mature male reproductive cell, capable of fertilizing an egg.
sperm
A highly coiled tube located on the edge of a testis, where sperm mature.
epididymis (ep-ih-DIH-dih-mus)
The tube through which sperm pass on their way from the testes and epididymis, out of the scrotum, and to the urethra.
vas deferens
Saclike structures that lie above the prostate, which produce about 60 percent of the seminal fluid.
seminal vesicles
The gland in the male, located below the bladder, that secretes some of the fluid in semen (40%.
prostate
Glands that secrete a clear alkaline fluid into the male’s urethra.
Cowper’s glands
