Unit 3- Input And Output Devices Flashcards
What’s the difference between memory and storage?
Memory-where data can be accessed directly
Storage
What is RAM and what does it store?
Random Access Memory (not rly random tho)
Form of primary memory which stores data CURRENTLY IN USE
What’s a memory cache?
External memory storage that keeps the safe the processor will likely use again
What does it mean for data to be volatile?
Means that what’s in the memory atm will be lost when the computer is turned off
What’s a register?
Tiny bit in the processor that temporarily stores data that hasn’t been saved yet
What’s a HDD?
Hard Drive Disk-uses disks and read-write heads to read data in the form of magnetised iron particles
What is an operating system and it’s function?
In charge of the general running on the computer
Manages interface
What does PROM mean and what it do?
Programmable ROM
Means it can be edited but only once
What does ROM stand for and what does it store?
Read-only memory
Primary memory that stores the start up (aka boot) process
What r the different types of secondary storage?
Hard Drive Disk
Solid State Drive
Removable devices
Describe a SSD
Solid State Drive-stores data via electrons
Has no moving parts
Define latency
System lag
What does primary memory mean?
Part of CPU’s direct memory
It can get to the temporary stuff
What’s the difference between DRAM and SRAM?
DRAM-dynamic RAM that needs constantly refreshing
SRAM- static RAM that doesn’t need refreshing
What does refreshing mean?
Keeping the same electrical state by charging a component
