Unit 3 - Homeostasis and Kidneys Flashcards
Which waste products have to be removed from the body?
Urea and Carbon Dioxide
How is Carbon Dioxide produced and removed?
Produced: by respiration in every living cell
Removed: via the lungs when we breathe out
How is Urea removed and produced and where is it stored?
Produced: in the liver by the breakdown of excess amino acids
Removed: by the kidneys in the urine
Stored: temporarily stoed in the bladded
What internal conditions are controlled? (4)
- The water content of the body
- The ion content of the body
- Temperature
- Blood sugar levels
What do kidneys do?
They control the water content of the blood and the ion (salt) content of the body
How does the kidney receive blood
From the renal artery
How does (a healthy) kidney produces urine?
Filtering the blood
- Blood enters the capillaries under high pressure
- Mot of the liquid leaves the blood and enters the tubule
- The cells and large molecules remain in the blood
- The blood becomes very concentrated
What is selective reabsorbtion?
The amount of water and mineral ions that are reabsorbed by the body depending upon its need
