Unit 3 - Blood Flashcards
What is the circulatory system made up of?
Heart, blood and blood vessles
What is the circulatory systems main function?
To get food and oxygen to every cell in the body
What is blood made up from?
A liquid called plasma and blood cells that float in the plasma
Describe what the first circulatory system does
It pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to take in oxygen, the blood then returns to the heart
Decribe what the second circulatory system does?
It pumps oxygenated blood around all the other organs if the body.
The blood gives up its oxygen at the body cells and the deoxygenated blood returns to the heart to be pumped out to the lungs again
What is the plasma?
The liquid part of the blood in which red blood cells white blood cells and platelets are carried
What percentage of the blood is plasma?
55%
What dissolved substances does the plasma contain?
Urea, ood, Carbon Dioxide, mineral ions, hormones and fibrinogen
What are the adaptations of red blood cells for carrying blood around the body
- RBC’s are biconcave disc-like cells
- They posses no nucleus
- They have maximum surface area avaliable to absorb oxygen
- Their shape provides a short diffusion distance for oxygen
What is the red blood cells function?
To carry oxygen around the body
What pignment do RBC’s contain and what does it do?
Haemoglobin, which combines with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin
WBC’s: What do phagocytes do?
Ingest bacteria and render them harmless
WBC’s: Lymphocytes?
Lymphocytes can produce antibodies, antibodies are proteins that attack foreign bodies in the body
What do platelets do?
Help to clot blood
What od platelets do when there is a cut/hole? And then what happens?
They release enzymes in the direction of the injury,
and the fibrinogen in the blood is transfomed into a fibrin net which
forms a clot to stop the loss of blood through the wound
