Unit 3: Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What are biological catalysts?
A
enzymes
2
Q
What are catabolic enzymes?
A
These enzymes break down large molecules into smaller ones.
3
Q
What are anabolic enzymes?
A
These enzymes build up large molecules from smaller ones
4
Q
Where is the enzyme catalase found?
A
In liver cells. Catalase speeds up the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide - a poisonous substance formed as a product of reactions in cells.
5
Q
The shape of the substrate and the active site are COMPLEMENTARY. What does this mean?
A
Enzymes are specific - theu only work on one substrate.
6
Q
What is the lock and key model?
A
enzyme specificity - each enzyme is specific in that it will only work on its normal substrate
