Unit 1 Cells - Multi cellular organisms Flashcards
Definition of cells?
Microscopic building blocks of all living things
Definition of tissues?
Similar cells with the same structure grouped together.
Definition of organs?
Structure made of several tissue types that carry out a particular function (eg. the heart/ a leaf)
Definition of organ systems ?
A group of organs that operate together to carry out aparticular function (eg. circulatory system)
Definition of organism?
All the organ systems grouped together make a complex animal/plant
Complete the flow diagram :
Cell – Tissue – Organ – Organ system
Cardiac muscle cell – cardiac muscle tissue – heart – circulatory system
What is the function of the ‘Nervous System’ ?
responds to stimuli and making responses
What are the main organs of the nervous system?
brain, spinal cord, receptors (eg.eye), effectors (eg.muscles)
Function of ‘excretory system’?
maintaining water balance and removing poisonous waste
Main organs of excretory system?
Kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra
Explain how a ‘red blood cell’ is specialised?
biconcave shape/ no nucleus, allowing more oxygen to be carried
How is a ‘neurone’ specialised ?
long and thin with many extensions
How is s a sperm cell specialised?
Has a tail to swim to egg
How is a root hair cell (in plant roots) specialised?
Long extension to absorb water.
How are ‘ciliated epithelial cells’ specialised?
Cilia to waft to & fro removing bacteria from airways.
