Cells Flashcards
What are animal cells surounded by?
Permeable cell membrane
What is the role of the cell membrane?
Controls what can enter or leave the cell.
The main part of the cell is the cytoplasm. What happens here?
Chemical reactions take place here.
What is the control centre of the cell called?
Nucleus
What is each chromosome made up of?
Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA)
What does DNA have?
Genetic information coded in its structure
What takes place in the mitochondria?
Cell respiration
In a plant cell, what is the role of the cellulose cell wall?
Prevents the cell bursting when it takes in water and provides support.
What does the plant permanent vacuole contain?
Cell sap.
What does the cell sap do?
When it is full, pushes the cell membrane against the cell wall, making the cell rigid and provides more support.
What do chloroplasts do?
Traps light and helps the plant make more food durng photosynthesis.
What are bacteria?
Single-celled organisms, neither plant NOR animal.
Do bacterial cells have a nucleus?
No
What form does the genetic material (DNA) have within the cytoplasm?
A circular chromosome
What are plasmids?
Small rings of DNA
