Unit 3 Definitions Flashcards
What is the definition of a feedstock?
A substance derived from a raw material which is used to manufacture another substance.
What is the definition of Hess’s Law?
The enthalpy change of a chemical reaction depends only on the chemical nature and physical state of the reactants and products and is independent of any intermediate steps.
What is the definition of the enthalpy of combustion?
The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is completely burned in oxygen.
What is the definition of Equilibrium?
State attained in a reversible reaction when the forward and reverse reactions are taking place at the same rate.
What is the definition of oxidation in terms of electrons?
A process in which electrons are lost.
What is the definition of reduction in terms of electrons?
A process in which electrons are gained.
What is the definition of REDOX?
A reaction in which reduction and oxidation take place. Electrons are lost by one substance and gained by another.
What is the definition of a reducing agent?
A substance that loses electrons, in other words is an electron donor/gives away electrons.
What is the definition of an oxidising agent?
A substance that gains electrons, in other words is an electron acceptor/receives electrons.
