Unit 3 Course Content Flashcards
Why is it important to consider the notion of motivation in sport?
- motivation to reach potential is a shared, fundamental goal of athletes and coaches
- motivation is commonly used (by both athletes and coaches) as a scapegoat for poor performance
2 components of motivation:
- directional factor (directs choices)
2. intensity factor (amount of energy available to be directed)
Behavioural Approach on motivation in sport:
depends on fundamental principles of learning theory (classical conditioning, operant conditioning and vicarious learning)
Cognitive Approach on motivation sport:
emphasizes the role of active thinking and cognitive habits as determinants of behaviour
KEY CONCEPT: person’s interpretation of the situation
Cognitive-behavioural Approaches on motivation in sport
assumes that thoughts are (1) influenced by emotions and behaviour and (2) behaviours can influence thinking and emotion
What are the two models of motivation?
- Transtheoretical Model (TM)
2. Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB)
Describe the Transtheoretical Model
- acknowledges that people don’t decide to change their behaviour then immediately change their behaviour
- there is a gradual process with stages
- aka stage model
What are the stages of behaviour change in the Transtheoretical Model?
- precontemplation
- contemplation
- preparation
- actino
- maintenance
Describe the Theory of Planned Behaviour
- states that intention to perform a behaviour is fundamental to behaviour change
Define intention in terms of the Theory of Planned Behaviour
- determined by individual’s attitude toward the behaviour and social norms
- one will maintain/initiate something if they feel in control
- intention is a function of attitude toward exercise and perceived social norms
Describe Attribution Theory
