unit 3: colorimetry Flashcards
colorimetry uses the relationship between
the colour intensity of a solution and the concentration of the coloured species present
the higher the intensity
the higher the concentration
a colorimeter (spectrophotometer) is used to
measure the absorbance of light of a series of standard solutions at a specific wavelength
a filter is used in the colorimeter which ensures
only light of the chosen wavelength passes into the samples
colour of the filter
should be the complementary colour of the solution being analysed
calibration curve
the graph of absorbance vs concentration
the graph should form a
straight line
if the measured absorbance lies out with the calibration curve
the sample must be diluted until it falls within range
dilution calculation
c1v1=c2v2
dilution calculation is used to
calculate the concentration of standard solutions made by dilution
what should be tested in between concentrations
distilled water
