Blockading Southern ports.

Bounty
A sum of money given as a bonus to individuals who promised 3 years of service in the military.
Blockade runners
Small, fast ships that would evade the blockade usually at night to trade cotton in Europe for shoes, rifles, etc.
Emancipation Proclamation
The executive order from President Lincoln declaring “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”

A person who has been captured and held captive by a group during or after conflict.

An organization created by the U.S. government to provide medical/sanitary assistance to the Union forces.

General in the Union Army.

The bloodiest battle in American history.
Lasted 3 days with over 46,000 casualties.
Turning point of the war.
Forage
A wide search for food or provisions.
March to the Sea
A military campaign where Sherman sent his troops south of Atlanta to cut the railways leading to the city. *Marched across Georgia.
Pillage
Stealing something using violence in war (ex. fires, looting).
Sherman Neckties
Sherman’s troops would heat steel beams in the center and bend them around trees.
13th Amendment
Passed January 31, 1865 - banning slavery in the United States.
Appomattox Courthouse
Location of one of the last battles of the Civil War, in Appomattox County, Virginia.

The peak of the battle Battle of Gettysburg, a pivotal moment of the Civil War.
