Radical Republicans
Did not want peace with the South, hated slavery and discrimination.
Wade-Davis Bill
Bill led by the Radical Republicans to balance power and abolish slavery.
Pocket Veto
An indirect veto. Lincoln did this to the Wade-Davis bill.
Freedman’s Bureau
Tasks of feeding and clothing war refugees in the south using surplus army supplies.
Black codes
A series of laws that severely limited rights for African Americans.
Civil Rights Act of 1866
Act that attempted to overturn Black Codes. This granted citizenship of all people in US except Native Americans and declared that they would all be treated equally and have property rights.
14th Amendment
Granted citizenship to all people born in the US.
Impeach
A charge of misconduct made against the holder of a public office.
15th Amendment
Allowed African Americans to vote and be involved in politics.
Carpetbagger
Southern Democrats name for the newcomers because some came with suitcases made of carpet fabric.
Scalawag
Southerners who joined the Northern Republicans.
Graft
Bribes that corrupt politicians took.
KKK
African American hate group.
Sin Tax
A tax on a specific activity or good that is considered harmful to society. Like alcohol and tobacco.
Horace Greeley
American newspaper editor and publisher. Founded the New-York Tribune.
“Whiskey Ring”
Controversy over the sin-tax on alcohol.
Panic of 1873
Bad railroad investments had caused the stock market to plummet causing thousands of businesses to close.
Economic Downturn
Compromise of 1877
The removal of all federal troops from the former Confederate States.
“New South”
An economic shift in the South.
Tenant Farmer
Farmers working on rented land.
Sharecropper
A tenant farmer who gives a part of each crop as rent.
Crop Lien
A credit system mostly used by cotton farmers.
Debt Peonage
A system where an employer forces a worker to pay off debt with more work.
