Unit 3 Chapter 4: Volumetric analysis Flashcards
Primary standard is suitable if (out of 5):
o Readily obtainable in pure form
o Has known chemical formula
o Easy to store without deteriorating or reacting
o High molar mass to minimise effect of error in weigh
o Inexpensive
Standard solution
solution of accurately known concentration
pH curve
graph showing the change in pH during acid-base titration (shape depends on concentration of acids and bases used)
Volumetric analysis
analytical technique for determining concentration of solution by titrating it against solution of known concentration and volume (standard solution)
Accuracy
how closely a measurement agrees with the true value
Precision
how close a set of measurements are to each other
Systematic error
produces constant bias in measurement which cannot be eliminated by repeating the measurement
Random error
can be reduced through repetition
