Unit 3: Bacterial Infections Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
Pharyngitis
Inflammation of the pharynx (throat)
Erythema
Redness
Exudate
Protein and cellular elements that oozes out of blood vessels due to increased permeability (WHITE PATCHES)
Lymphadenopathy
Cervical lymph nodes
How is strep throat spread?
Thru respiratory droplets
What is Streptococcus pyogenes?
Attachment virulence factor of Streptococcus pyogenes
Uses 2 proteins
1) M Protein
2) Protein F (fimbriae)
Invasion virulence factor of streptococcus pyogenes
3 Enzymes
1) streptokinase =dissolves blood clots
2) Hyaluronidase = breaks down hyaluronic acid that joins host cells together
3) deoxyribonuclease = breaks up DNA from damaged host cells to make for easier passage thru body
What type or hemolysis does Streptococcus pyogenes cause?
Beta hemolysis
Scarlet Fever
Bright red rash & fever due to erythrogenic toxin made by some strains
Rheumatic Fever
Damage to heart muscle occurs because M-Protein resembles heart muscles & host immune system attack heart muscles and heart valves
Acute Glomerulonephritis
Antibodies (Ab) made by host complex w/ antigens (Ag) from S. Pyogenes - Ag-Ab complexes deposit in glomeruli of kidney leading to kidney damage
