Unit 3 Flashcards
Process by which an organism transforms, transports, absorbs nutrients
Digestion
Digestion: how the body converts macronutrients and some micronutrients into simpler elements called _________
bolus
Bolus is absorbed by the body and the ________
blood
Provides body with energy
Digestive system
Cavity where teeth, tongue and salivary glands are found; crush food, move particles around; flavor.
Mouth
Tube that connects oral cavity and nostril with esophagus and larynx; swallowing and respiration.
Pharynx
Tube that connects pharynx with stomach; transports food to stomach
Esophagus
Bag or sac located between esophagus and small intestine; transform food into a muse called CHYME: Absorbed by small intestine, beginning of chemical digestion
Stomach
Fat, elongated gland behind stomach; produces enzymes that help digestion; metabolism of fats
Pancreas
Hormones of the pancreas
Insulin and glucogon
Largest internal organ located in the right side of the abdomen (alcohol); stores vitamins and glycogen;reserves polysaccharides
Liver
Located under liver; stores bile; dissolves fats/facilitates digestion and absorption of nutrients
Gallblader
Tube that connects stomach w/large intestine : finishes doing chemical digestion, decompose, absorb and assimilate nutrients
Small intestine
Muscular tube; formed by cecum (holds appendix, colon and rectum); absorb water, minerals and some vitamins (K and B12) stores remains of digestion
Large intestine
Chemical process by which the cells transforms nutrients into energy to perform functions such as breathing, blood circulation, digestion, keeping body temp.
Metabolism
