Describe the Role of Women during this time period

A

They had a role in the revolutionary war by resisting Britsh taxes by making their own goods, like tea and textiles. (Daughters of Liberty)

Camp followers helped provide nursing to the army, as well as performing daily tasks.

However, they were afforded very little actual political rights. The prevalent idea of the time, republican motherhood, stated that women were responsible for the early education of the boys who would someday become voting citizens.

  1. The Proclamation of 1763: The American Colonists were angered at the British restriction on Westward Expansion since they felt they had shed their blood to gain that land. The British did not want another war and wanted favorable trading relations.
  2. Taxation without Representation: Britain’s debt greatly increased after the 7 years war, leading to the end of the period of salutory neglect. They started to enforce the already existing Navigation Acts, whcih restricted colonial trade to only Britain
  3. Quartering Act: Imperial troops would stay with the colonists at their expense, even after the war

  1. Proclmation of 1763
  2. Sugar Act: Imposed taxes on luxury iterms like coffee and wine
  3. Stamp Act: All printed documents would be taxed
  4. The Stamp Act Congress is formed and petitioned the British to repeal the Stamo act
  5. The British listen and repeal the Stamp and Sugar Act. They pass the Declaratory Act to say they could pass any law they wish on the colonists
  6. Townshend Acts: Created taxes on products imported into the US like paper, glass, and tea
  7. The Colonists, such as the Sons and Daughters of liberty boycott these goods and intimidate tax collectors
  8. The Boston Massacare occours, which galvanize resistance to the British
  9. The Boston Tea Party dumps dea into the harbour to protest the Tea Act
  10. The Intolerable acts significantly restrict masschusetts. They closed its government, made the city under martial law, and closed the Boston port.
