Expressed powers, inherent powers
Expressed powers
powers are the ones explicitly named and described in the constitution. For example: grant pardons, inform Congress of the state of the union, take care clause
Inherent powers
powers are the ones implied to exist. think “implied’ powers of the legislative branch- necessary and proper
Chief executive
Article II constitution: “the executive power shall be vested in a president of the United States of America
Cabinet
the heads of 15 major executive departments, VP, and heads of other agencies. Chosen by the president, confirmed by the senate. advise the president
executive order
instructing this bureaucracy on how to implement policy. not subject to a vote in congress
pardons
presidential authority to forgive an individual and set aside punishment for a crime
Chief diplomat
makes treaties- 2/3 ratification from the senate. appoint ambassadors. receive ambassadors. executive agreements
executive agreements
an agreement between a president and another nation that does not have the same durability in the american system as a treaty but does not require senate ratification. not subject to senate approval
chief economist
initiates the budgeting process every year. propose a budget for congress to ratify. appoints the head of the federal reserve bank
