17
Q

social and economic challenges in Birmingham as a result of urban change: urban deprivation

A

with closure of manufacturing industry and high unemployment, parts of Birmingham experienced a spiral of social and economic decline leading to deprivation.

18

social and economic challenges in Birmingham as a result of urban change: inequalities n housing

A

Birmingham’s high population has resulted in pressures on housing. There is not enough good quality and affordable housing for people in city.

19
Q

social and economic challenges in Birmingham as a result of urban change: education

A

quality of education was particularly poor in inner city areas such as Aston. Aston is an area of deprivation with an ethnically diverse community where many children struggled to access and succeed in education.

20

A

closure of factories in manufacturing industry led to high unemployment.

22
Q

environmental challenges in Birmingham as a result of urban change: dereliction

A

derelict buildings from manufacturing industry are common in inner city areas.

23
Q

environmental challenges in Birmingham as a result of urban change: building on brownfield and greenfield sites

A

Building on greenfield sites results in the loss of more green space and may make urban sprawl worse. building on brownfield sites will improve a derelict site as the space is reused for a new development.

24
Q

environmental challenges in Birmingham as a result of urban change: Waste disposal

A

large urban population produces a lot of household and commercial waste which creates challenges for how to manage and dispose of this waste.

25
Q

describe water conservation as a method of sustainable urban living

A

water conservation schemes reduce amount of water used eg.

  • collecting rainwater for use on gardens or flushing toilets
  • installing toilets that use less water to flush
  • installing water meters so that people have to pay for water they use
  • encouraging people to use less water
26
Q

describe energy conservation as a method of sustainable urban living

A

fossil fuels not sustainable as they’ll run out
energy conservation schemes reduce fossil fuel use eg.
- promoting renewable energy sources
- government incentives to make homes more energy efficient
- making sure new homes meet minimum energy efficiency requirements
- encouraging people to use less energy at home

27
Q

describe waste recycling as a method of sustainable urban living

A

more recycling=fewer resources used, less waste produced, reduces amount in landfill. landfill sites unsustainable as wastes resources that could be recycled, eventually they’ll be nowhere to bury waste and decomposing landfill releases greenhouse gases

  • collection of household recycling boxes
  • recycling facilities for larger items
  • websites where items offered free so can be used by others instead of thrown away
28
Q

describe creating green space as a method of sustainable urban living

A

cities unsustainable as people find them unpleasant and stressful.creating green space helps it remain a place people want to stay in.they:

  • provide naturally cooler areas where people can relax in hot weather
  • encourage people to exercise more + use alternative transport, makes people healthier + less stressed
  • make [people feel happier by providing break from city noise and bustle
  • reduce risk of flooding by reducing surface runoff
  • reduce air pollution
