Q

What is the main difference between an ionic bond and a covalent bond?

A

In a covalent bond the atoms will share their electrons, while in an ionic bond the metal loses electrons and the non-metal gains electrons.

5
Q

Describe an ionic bond.

A

One atom has a stronger attraction for electrons

than the other and “steals” the electrons

from the other atom. The atom with the higher

electronegativity will take the

electron(s) away from the other atom.

6
Q

Describe a covalent bond.

A

The attraction for electrons is similar for two atoms. They share their electrons to obtain an octet.

7
Q

What is the octet rule?

A

An atom with less than 8 electrons in the last shell tends to combine with another atom to fill its outer shell to a maximum of 8 electrons. (He and H only need 2 valene electrons)

Q

What is the difference between a cation and an anion?

A

A cation has a positive charge while an anion has a negative charge. A cation loses electrons and an anion gains electrons.

Q

How do you determine the charge of a metal ion?

A

A metal always loses electrons so the charge is always positive, the number value is = to the # of valence electrons.

Q

How do you determine the charge of a non-metal ion?

A

A non-metal always gains electrons so the charge is always negative, the number value is = to 8 - valence electrons.

Q

Where do you start adding dots (valence electrons) for the Lewis dot diagram?

A

Above the atom’s symbol and to the right. You go clockwise.
