Unit 2 topic 4-6 vocabulary Flashcards
element symbols
one or more letters used to represent the name of a substance
chemical group
is the vertical column in the periodic table
period
the horizontal row of the periodic table
metals
a solid material that is typically hard, shiny and malleable
malleable
able to be hammered or pressed out of shape without breaking or cracking
ductile
able to be drawn out into a thin wire
nonmetals
an element or substance that is not a metal.
metalloids
elements with properties between metals and nonmetals.
alkali metals
very reactive metals such as lithium, sodium, or potassium
alkaline earth metals
the alkaline earth elements react fairly vigorously with some substances, but they are not as reactive as the alkali metals.
halogens
They are naturally found in the form of compounds because halogen atoms react vigorously with almost every other element.
Noble gases
are unreactive and they are chemically stable. They do not have unpaired electrons.
mass number
the total numbers of protons and neutrons in a nucleus
molecule
a group of atoms bonded together,
binary compounds
compounds made of two elements
