Q

If the extension of a spring is 20cm and the weight added is 30N, what is the spring constant? F = k xInclude the correct unit.

A

30 = k x 0.2K = 150 N/m

Q

What does a straight line through the origin on a force extension graph tell you?

A

The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force acting on it. This is called Hooke’s Law.

Q

What can you say about an elastic object when the line on a force extension graph is no longer straight?

A

The object has exceeded it’s elastic limit. It will no longer return to its original length.

Q

What does the gradient of a force extension graph tell you about an elastic object?

A

Its spring constant. The steeper the gradient the larger the force constant.

Q

If it takes 40N of weight to extend a spring 20cm how much work has been done of the spring include the unit. (work done = force x distance)

A

40 x 0.2 = 8J.
