Unit 1 - Red Shift And The Universe Flashcards
What is red shift?
The apparent increase in wavelength of light from a galaxy moving away from an observer.
What does blue shift tell us about the movement of a galaxy?
The Galaxy is moving towards us.
What does the amount of red shift tell us about a galaxies position and movement?
The bigger the red shift the further the Galaxy is away and the faster it is moving.
Other than red shift of galaxies, what other evidence supports the Big Bang theory?
Cosmic microwave background radiation CMBR.
It is thought that gamma rays were released in the Big Bang. How has the wavelength of these microwaves changed as the universe has expanded?
It has increased to produce what we can see in the universe now, microwaves , hence CMBR.
Name the effect of waves appearing to decreasing in wavelength from an observer as the wave source moves away from them.
The Doppler effect, covers sound, microwaves, light waves.
What happens to the wavelength of sound when an object releasing sound waves travels away from an observer?
It increases. The frequency therefore decreases.
The opposite is true if the object moves towards the observer.
