Unit 2: Reflexes Flashcards
define reflexes
stimulus –> response
obligatory
if theres a cns lesion in babies brain
unable to come out of ATNR (reflex/cannot move outside of reflex)
How are reflexes classified? KNOW WHAT THE STIMULUS IS AND ITS RESPONSE
automatic: neonatal
spinal cord
brainstem
midbrain
cortical
Primary Walking stimulus/response/age of suppress…
stimulus: hold infant in supported standing, tilt trunk forward slightly
response: reciprocal extension & fanning of toes
age of suppress: 0-2mo
neonatal neck righting stimulus/response/age of suppress
stimulus turn head when in supine
response: log roll to same side
age of suppress: 0-3mo
rooting stimulus/response/age of suppress
stimulus: stroking of perioral region from corner of mouth to cheek
response: head turning to that side with mouth opening
age of suppress: 0-3mo
*impt feeding response
sucking / swallow stimulus/response/age of suppress
stimulus: touch lips, tongue, palate
response: results to automatic sucking
age: 0-6mo
*impt feeding reflex
palmar grasp stimulus/response/age of suppress
stimulus: pressure to palm ULNAR SIDE
response: grasping of object with slow release
age: 0-4mo
plantar grasp stimulus/response/age of suppress
stimulus: pressure to sole or lowering feet to floor JUST BELOW TOES
response: curling of toes
age: 0-9mo
moro reflex stimulus/response/age of suppress
stimulus: sudden neck extension
response: shoulder abduction; shoulder elbow, finger ext followed by arm flexion abduction
age: 4-6mo
startle stimulus/response
stimulus: sudden noise, clapping
response: shoulder abduction; shoulder elbow, finger ext followed by arm flexion abduction
rooting (AGAIN IN CHART) stimulus/response/age of suppression
Stimulus: stroking lips around mouth
reflex: moving mouth , head towards stimulus, in search of nipple
age: 4mo
positive supporting stimulus/response/age of suppression
stimulus: light pressure or weight bearing on feet
response: legs extend for partial weight bearing
age of suppression: 3-5 months replaces by volitional weight bearing w support
asymmetric tonic neck ATNR stimulus/response/age of suppression
stimulusL head turning to side
response: extremeties extend on face side, flex on occiput side
age 6-7 months
symmetric tonic STNR stimulus/response/age of suppression
stimulus: neck flexion and extension
response: arms flex, legs extend; arms extend, legs flex
age: 4-6 mo emerges- gone by 10mo
tonic labyrinthine reflex
prone position = maximal flexor tone
supine position = maximal extensor tone
asymmetric tonic neck reflex ATNR STNR
stimulus: rotation of head
response: extension of face side extremeties & flexion of skull side extremeties
placing reactions stimulus/response/age of suppression
stimulusL dorsum drag of foot or back of hand against edge of table
response: placing foot or hand onto table top
age 0-6mo
optical and labyrinthine righting stimulus/response/age of suppression
stimulation: body is tilted
reaction: head orients to vertical position- eyes orient
equilibrium reactions
SAFETY reactions which preserve the body under conditions of instability
*occur as baby matures in progression
protective reactions
when safety reaction fails
downward protective reaction
take baby by hips and tip them down- hands should bring both hands above head to save themselves
protective reaction forward
baby is learning how to sit and reaches forward between legs (5 mo)
sideward protective reaction
baby sitting protects itself from side (7mo)
protective extension backwards
catches itself from falling back onto elbows (9mo)
protective stagger reaction
baby does little steps to try to catch themselves from falling
dorsiflexion reaction protective reaction
?????
foot goes into dorsiflexion to stop from falling
what is reflex integration
the inhibition by neurological centers of MC which modify the reflex in such a way that the pattern of response is no longer stereotypical
when do protective reactionsoccur
forward
side
backwards
