Unit 2- Redox Flashcards
1
Q
What is oxidation?
A
- Loss of electrons
- Has an increase in oxidation number from its element
- An oxidising agent oxidises an element where it becomes reduced after
2
Q
What is reduction?
A
- Gain of electrons
- Decrease in oxidation numbers
- Reducing agent reduces an element where it becomes oxidised
3
Q
What are the rules in identifying oxidation numbers?
A
- Simple elements have an O.N of 0
- In simple ions, the O.N is the charge of the ion
- Sum of the O.N in a neutral compound is 0
- Sum of the O.N in a charged ion is the charge of the ion
- Some elements have fixed O.N in their compounds
4
Q
Which elements have a fixed oxidation number?
A
- Group 1 metals- +1
- Group 2 metals- +2
- Aluminium- +3
- Hydrogen- +1
- Hydrogen in metal halides- -1
- Fluorine- -1
- Oxygen- -2
- Oxygen in peroxides- -1
- Oygen with fluorine- +1
- Chlorine- -1
- Chlorine bonded with oxygen and fluorine- +1
5
Q
How to identifiy a redox reaction?
A
- Must be a change in O.N of an element for it to be classed as a redox reaction
6
Q
What is a disproportionation reaction?
A
- An element is reduced and oxidised simultaneously
7
