Q

What are the rules in identifying oxidation numbers?

A
  • Simple elements have an O.N of 0
  • In simple ions, the O.N is the charge of the ion
  • Sum of the O.N in a neutral compound is 0
  • Sum of the O.N in a charged ion is the charge of the ion
  • Some elements have fixed O.N in their compounds
