Unit 2- Equilibria Flashcards

1
Q

Explain dynamic equilibrium

2.8.a

A

Dynamic equilbirum is when the backward and forward reaction have reached a stage where the net flow of molecules is equal therefore there is no overall effect.

Q

How does temperature affect an equilibrium system? 2.8.b

A
  • The system will move to counteract the change
  • If the temperature is increased, the system will move to decrease the temperature therefore favour the endothermic side, as it will take in energy thus reducing the temperature
  • If the temperature is decreased, the system willmove to increase the temperature therefore favour the exothermic side, as it will release energy thus increasing the temperature

Q

How does concentration affect an equilibirum system?

2.8.b

A
  • The system will change to counteract the change in concentration
  • If a reactants concentration is increased, the system will favour the products to use up the reactants so an equilibrium can be reached
  • If a products concentration is increased, the system will favour the reactants to use up the prodcuts so an equilbrium can be reached
  • If a products concentration is decreased, the system will favour the the products side to increase the products so an equilibrium can be reached

Q

How does pressure affect an equilibrium system?

2.8.b

A
  • The system will change to counteract the change in pressure
  • If the pressure is increased, the system will favour the side with less moles.
  • If the pressure is decreased, the system will favour the side with more moles.
  • If the number of moles are equal on both sides, there are no changes in the equilibrium system
