Unit 2- Intermediate bonding and polarity Flashcards
Define electronegativity
A measure of the pull of shared pairs of electrons in a covalent bond
Define polar covalent bonds
Bonds between atoms of different elements
Define polar molecules
Polar bonds which do not cancel eachother therefore leaving the whole molecule to be polar
What is a spectrum of bonding?
A spectrum where the ends are purely ionic and purely covalent. Arises due to the electronegativity of atoms in a bond
What type of bonding do two atoms with the same electronegativity have?
Purely covalent e.g. diatomic molecules
What does the electronegativity have to be like for an ionic bond?
Large difference between the atoms in the bond
What does a greater difference mean in electronegativity?
The more polar a bond is
When does ionic bonding occur?
When the electronegativity is large enough to remove the electron from the bonded atom
