Political Party
Group of persons who seek to control govt through winning of elections and the holding of public office. They want to create policies that most in party agree with.
Major Parties
Political parties with a majority of the vote and support. Democrat and Republican rn.
Minor Parties
Parties without a majority of the vote and support. Green, Libertarian, etc.
Single-member district
One person represents entire district, win by majority
Split-ticket voting
Voting for both parties on a ballot
Watchdog
Someone/Some group that makes sure people are doing what they say. Political parties are watch dogs of govt office holders.
15th Amendment
Any race/ethnicity/former slave can vote without trouble
19th Amendment
Women’s suffrage
24th Amendment
Abolition of poll taxes
26th Amendment
Lower voting age from 21 to 18
Political Socialization
process by which people gain their political beliefs. TV, education, peers, etc.
Nomination
Choosing someone to run for office. Political parties nominate candidates
Open primary
Anyone from any political party can vote
Closed primary
Only members of the party can vote
Political Action Committee
type of organization that pools campaign contributions from members and donates those funds to campaign for or against candidates, ballot initiatives, or legislation.
