French and Indian War
A war fought between the French and the Colonist. They mainly fought over land. During this war, the Colonist and British had to fight together. However, this showed the divide between the British and Colonist. This war was the first time that George Washington was a war general. The Colonist and British won.
Proclamation of 1763
The British government after the F and I War said the Colonist couldn’t settle west of the Appalachian Mountains, which was not fair because the Colonist just fought and died in a war for this land.
Iroquois Confederacy
A government in Albany made from 5 (later 6) tribes. They dealt with the French, Dutch and British in North America and negotiated with these nations.
Little Turtle
A Native American military leader. Chief of the Miami people. Defeated General St. Clair.
Stamp Act
A direct tax on all printed papers in the colonies. Then the Colonist were all pissy and formed a bunch of anti- British groups.
Committees of Correspondence
A Patriot government formed by leaders in each of the 13 colonies.

Many cities also had their own Committee. The Boston Committee of Correspondence was in charge of the Boston Tea Party.
Intolerable Acts
A series of acts that came after the Boston Tea Party. Hurt the colonies economically by closing ports. Additionally, it decreased the power of governments in the colonies and gave the royal government more rights. Created the Quartering Act and the Justice Act.
Jay’s Treaty
1795 trade treaty between the United States and Great Britain, which resolved remaining issues from the 1783 Treaty of Paris.
Pinckney’s Treaty
A 1795 treaty between the United States and Spain; it defined the boundaries of the United States and Spanish Colonies.
Sons of Liberty
A secret society formed to protect the rights of the colonist. Formed after the Stamp Act. Disbanded after the Stamp Act was repealed.
Mercy Otis Warren
Political writer and propagandist of the American Revolution. Was one of the few women who had the education to write about politics.
Loyalist vs Patriots
Loyalist–> Loyal to the king
Patriots–> wanted change
Washington’s Farewell Address

- not to fall into sectionalism

Common Sense
A pamphlet by Thomas Paine that said it was Common Sense to separate from the British government and ask for the independence of the colonies. Convinced the people who were “on the fence” about the revolution.
Articles of Confederation
Gave most of the power to the individual states, and not much to the national government. Tried to avoid a monarchy.

Constitutional Convention
Took place in Philly. Was originally intended to revise the Articles, however lead to the creation of the US Constitution.
KY and VA Resolution
Political statements where the legislatures of these 2 states declared the Alien and Sedition Acts were unconstitutional.
