UNIT 2: Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
A
2
Q
- Consists of all the nerve cells. It is the body’s speedy, electrochemical communication system.
- Gather & process information, produce responses to stimuli, and coordinate the workings of different cells. Every organism has one.
A
The Nervous System
3
Q
- The brain and spinal cord
- It receives, processes, interprets, and stores sensory information
- sights, tastes, sounds, pressure, color, etc.
A
Central Nervous System (CNS)
4
Q
- The sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system (CNS) to the rest of the body.
A
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
5
Q
- Sensory neurons (AFFERENT NEURONS)
- Motor neurons (EFFERENT NEURONS)
- Interneurons
A
Nervous System Neurons
6
Q
- send information from the body’s tissue to the brain (send message towards CNS)
A
Sensory neurons (AFFERENT NEURONS)
7
Q
- are used by the central nervous to communicate instructions (send messages away from CNS)
A
Motor neurons (EFFERENT NEURONS)
8
Q
- communicate between sensory neurons and motor neurons. Most complex and numerous.
A
Interneurons
9
Q
- nerves outside the brain and spinal cord
- Connect the CNS to the rest of the body
- Two major divisions the Motor pathway and the Sensory pathway
A
Peripheral nervous system
10
Q
- Somatic Nervous system
- Autonomic nervous system
- All portions of the nervous system outside the brain & the spinal cord
A
Peripheral nervous system
11
Q
- The division of the peripheral nervous system that controls the body’s skeletal muscles.
- Controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscles
- sends signal from brain to skeletal muscles to allow voluntary movement
A
Somatic Nervous system
12
Q
- Sympathetic Nervous System
- Parasympathetic Nervous System
- Regulates the functioning of blood vessels, glands, and internal organs like bladder, stomach, and heart.
A
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
13
Q
- Division of the ANS that calms the body, conserving its energy.
- Calms you down, goes back to the way it was before (“rest and digest”)
A
Parasympathetic Nervous System
14
Q
- Division of the ANS that arouses the body, mobilizing its energy in stressful situations.
- heart rate increases, attention becomes focused, digestions slows, etc… (“Fight, flight, or freeze”)
A
Sympathetic Nervous System
