Consumer
An animal that eats other organisms or parts of organisms to get energy for life
Invertebrate
An animal without a backbone. 95% of animal species are invertebrates
Many invertebrates do not have any bones
Exoskeleton
A hard, external covering which supports the body. Many invertebrates have this
Vertebrates
Animals that have a backbone
Most reproduce sexually
Endoskeleton
An internal skeleton that supports an animal’s body
Types of Vertebrates
Amphibians - live on land and water
Reptiles - have scales or plates. Lay eggs
Birds - have wings and feathers. Lay eggs
Mammals - have hair or fur, a jaw, 3 middle ear bones and produce milk
Fish - live in water
Types of body plan ( symmetry)
Asymmetry - the animal is irregular in shape
Radial Symmetry - the body of the animal is organized like spokes on a wheel
Bilateral Symmetry - the animal has 2 sides that mirror each other
What characteristics do all animals have?
Multicellular
Specialized Parts - cells develop into different types of cells
Movement
Reproduction - mostly sexual, some asexual
Consumers
Maintain body temperature
