unit 2 KA2 - alcohols and carboxylic acids Flashcards
what is an alcohol
a molecule containing a hydroxyl functional group - -OH group
is it true that straight-chain and branched alcohols can be systematically named, indicating the position of the hydroxyl group from structural formula containing no more than eight carbon atoms in their longest chain?
yehhh
what is a primary alcohol
primary alcohols occur when the hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon with two other hydrogen atoms attached to it - basically meaning its attached to the end of the carbon chain
what is a secondary alcohol
these occur when the hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon atom with one other hydrogen atom attached - basically meaning it is attached to a middle carbon in the chain
what is a tertiary alcohol
these occur when the hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon that has a branch attached to it, such as a methyl group.
what are diols
alcohols containing two hydroxyl groups
what are triols
alcohols containing three hydroxyl groups
what is a carboxylic acid
a molecule containing the carboxyl functional group, -COOH
is it true that straight chain and branched carboxylic acids can be sytematically named from structural formula containing no more than eight carbons in the longest chain?
yeh
what are the carboxylic acid reactions with bases
- metal oxide + acid -> a salt + water
- metal hydroxide + acid -> a salt and water
- metal carbonate + acid -> a salt and water and carbon dioxide
what does the name of the salt produced from carboxylic acid + base reactions depend on
the acid and base used
