Unit 2 - KA1 (Gamete production and fertilisation) Flashcards
What are the 4 functions of the male reproductive system?
- Produces male sex hormones
- Produces sperm in the testes
- Stores sperm in the testes
- Penis Deposits sperm into the vagina during sexual intercourse.
What are seminiferous tubules?
Mass of sperm producing tubules
Where are interstitial tissue found?
It is found between the seminiferous tubules
What are interstitial tissues composed of?
Composed of interstitial cells
Where is testosterone produced?
In the interstitial cells of the testes
What is the function of testosterone?
Stimulates the sperm
How and where are sperm produced?
Formed by meiosis in the seminiferous tubules.
What is mobility?
The ability to move
What is viability?
The ability to survive and be successful
What does successful fertilisation rely on?
It relies on the ability of the sperm to move from the vagina, up through the uterus and into the oviducts where an ovum is present.
What is another word for oviducts?
Fallopian Tube
What is another word for fallopian tube?
Oviducts
What does mobility of sperm require?
- An energy source
- Fluid medium to swim in
- Other secretions to ensure viability
What are 2 types of accessory glands?
- Seminal Vesicle Glands
- Prostate Gland
What is the function of the prostate gland?
Secretes a fluid containing enzymes which maintain the correct viscosity (consistency) for sperm mobility.
What is the function of the seminal vesicle gland?
Releases a liquid rich in fructose (sugar) which provides energy for sperm.
Also releases a prostaglandin (a hormone-like chemical) which stimulates contractions i the female reproduction system.
What is semen?
The collective name for the sperm and secreted fluids. It has a milky appearance.
What are the 4 functions of the female reproductive system?
- Produces female gametes, Ova, in the ovaries.
- Produces two female sex hormones in the ovaries; oestrogen and progesterone.
- Uterus supports and provides nutrients to the developing zygote (fertilised egg) and later the embryo.
- Gives birth to the offspring.
What is the function of the uterus?
Supports and provides nutrients to the developing zygote (fertilised egg) and later the embryo.
What are the two hormones the ovaries produce?
Oestrogen and Progesterone
What are the female gametes and where are they found.
Ova (ovum singular), found in the ovaries
What is ovum contained in?
Follicle
What is follicle?
A cluster of cells which contain the ovum.
What do follicles secrete?
The hormone oestrogen
