What is a somatic cell?
Any cell in the body other than those involved in reproduction
What is a germline cell?
Gametes (sperm and ova) and stem cells that divide to form gametes
What are the 4 types of tissue cells?
Connective, muscle, nervous and epithelial
What do somatic cells divide by?
Mitosis
What do germline cells divide by?
Mitosis and meiosis
What are embryonic stem cells?
Found in human blastocyst
Pluripotent (can make all cell types)
What are adult tissue cells?
Found in specific areas of the body
Multipotent - can only take the type of cells in a particular tissue
What are research use of stem cells?
The study of diseases and their development
Drug testing
What are therapeutic uses of stem cells?
Regeneration of damaged skin to treat burn patients
Stem cell grafts for corneal repair
What are ethical issue of stem cells?
Result in effective treatment of disease but results in the destruction of potential life
What are the characteristics of a benign tumour?
- Slow growing
- Capsualted
- Non-invasive
What are the characteristics of a malignant tumour?
- Fast-growing
- Non-capsualted
- Invasive
